Day masters / Eul
Yin Wood · The Flower and Vine
을 · Eul · yin Wood 木 · like a vine that finds its way around anything
You are graceful and resourceful. Where others push, you find the path around, and you read people and rooms quickly. Your gentleness is a strength that is easy to underestimate.
Natural strengths
- adaptable
- socially intelligent
- persistent
Worth watching
- depending on others for support
- hiding what you really want
What the other four elements are to you
A day master is never read alone. Every other character in the chart takes a role depending on how its element meets yours, and those roles are the ten gods (십신). For 乙:
- Fire 火
- Output (expression, talent, children) 식상
- Earth 土
- Wealth (money, results, father; for men, partner) 재성
- Metal 金
- Officer (career, rules, status; for women, partner) 관성
- Water 水
- Resource (learning, support, mother) 인성
Which of these you need more of depends on the whole chart, not on the day master alone. A 乙 born into a chart full of its own element wants an outlet; the same 乙 standing alone wants support. That judgement — strong or weak, and therefore which element is your 용신 (yongsin, the useful element) — is the first thing a reading settles.
乙 in each season
The month you were born into carries more weight than any other single character, because it sets the climate the whole chart lives in.
- spring (Wood months) — your own element is in season, so the day master is at its strongest — confident, but at risk of having no outlet.
- summer (Fire months) — the season draws expression out of you: productive and visible, and quietly tiring.
- autumn (Metal months) — the season presses on you: duty, structure and demand arrive early, and the chart usually needs support to carry them.
- winter (Water months) — the season feeds you, so support, learning and comfort come easily — sometimes too easily to act on.
- The turn of each season (Earth months, the last weeks of each season) — the season is full of what you act on: opportunity everywhere, and a day master that needs its own strength to hold it.
乙 and 甲: the same element, two temperaments
Wood appears twice among the ten stems, once yang and once yin. 乙 (Eul) is the yin form — a vine that finds its way around anything — while 甲 (Gap) is a tall tree reaching for the sky. They share an element and therefore share the same roles toward everything else in a chart, but they carry it differently: adaptable against principled.
Traditional correspondences for Wood
When a reading recommends your element, these are the everyday forms it takes: the colours green, teal; the direction east; the season spring; the numbers 3 and 8; the sour flavour. In classical East Asian medicine the wood phase is associated with the liver and gallbladder — a cultural lens on rhythm and balance, not a medical claim.
Is 乙 your day master?
It comes from the day you were born, not the year, and it shifts with the true solar time of your birthplace. Calculate your chart and look at the day pillar — and if it turns out to be another stem, the other nine are here.
