Day masters / Jeong
Yin Fire · The Candle
정 · Jeong · yin Fire 火 · like a candle or lantern in the dark
Your light is focused and intimate. You notice what others miss, you care deeply about a few people, and you think before you shine. You bring meaning to small moments.

What the other four elements are to you
A day master is never read alone. Every other character in the chart takes a role depending on how its element meets yours, and those roles are the ten gods (십신). For 丁:
- Wood 木
- Resource (learning, support, mother) 인성
- Earth 土
- Output (expression, talent, children) 식상
- Metal 金
- Wealth (money, results, father; for men, partner) 재성
- Water 水
- Officer (career, rules, status; for women, partner) 관성
Which of these you need more of depends on the whole chart, not on the day master alone. A 丁 born into a chart full of its own element wants an outlet; the same 丁 standing alone wants support. That judgement — strong or weak, and therefore which element is your 용신 (yongsin, the useful element) — is the first thing a reading settles.
丁 in each season
The month you were born into carries more weight than any other single character, because it sets the climate the whole chart lives in.
- spring (Wood months) — the season feeds you, so support, learning and comfort come easily — sometimes too easily to act on.
- summer (Fire months) — your own element is in season, so the day master is at its strongest — confident, but at risk of having no outlet.
- autumn (Metal months) — the season is full of what you act on: opportunity everywhere, and a day master that needs its own strength to hold it.
- winter (Water months) — the season presses on you: duty, structure and demand arrive early, and the chart usually needs support to carry them.
- The turn of each season (Earth months, the last weeks of each season) — the season draws expression out of you: productive and visible, and quietly tiring.
丁 and 丙: the same element, two temperaments
Fire appears twice among the ten stems, once yang and once yin. 丁 (Jeong) is the yin form — a candle or lantern in the dark — while 丙 (Byeong) is the sun at noon. They share an element and therefore share the same roles toward everything else in a chart, but they carry it differently: perceptive against optimistic.
Traditional correspondences for Fire
When a reading recommends your element, these are the everyday forms it takes: the colours red, purple, pink; the direction south; the season summer; the numbers 2 and 7; the bitter flavour. In classical East Asian medicine the fire phase is associated with the heart and small intestine — a cultural lens on rhythm and balance, not a medical claim.
Is 丁 your day master?
It comes from the day you were born, not the year, and it shifts with the true solar time of your birthplace. Calculate your chart and look at the day pillar — and if it turns out to be another stem, the other nine are here.
